Man has seemingly explored every square inch of this planet and there are not as many secrets in today’s world. Imagine the awe of mapping a twenty mile long lake in a remote fly in location for the very first time. Imagine exploring an expansive Canadian shield lake that is full of complex offshore reefs and bays that has a hushed reputation for producing trophy class lake trout, walleye and pike. A rare opportunity indeed. Kamuchawie Lake flew under the radar. Local anglers who had spent their lives fishing around Bakers Narrows and some of the best trophy lake trout water in northern Manitoba had heard about this lake for years, but few anglers ever had the chance to see Kamuchawie. This fly in lake had a few old log cabins and the longtime owners of this remote outpost never marketed the lake to the point where only a handful of anglers would ever see this massive lake each year. The anglers who fished this lake did so without any map and most of this large lake was seldom, if ever, fished. There are bays on this particular lake that haven’t seen a boat in decades.
Bakers Narrows Lodge recently had the opportunity to take ownership of this unique concession and has spent the entire summer aggressively renovating the buildings for guests including winterizing cabins to provide a unique fly in ice fishing camp.

Mike Howe has spent most of the summer mapping the lake so that guests will have access to contour maps of the complex structure. After an entire summer, Mike has estimated that he has been able to map about one third of the lake. There are endless bays, coves, and islands on this lake. The deepest water mapped so far is about 200 feet deep. Kamuchawie Lake is extremely clear where you can physically see your lure in 15 feet of water. The lake had a renowned reputation for giant lake trout, but this lake also produces big walleye and huge northern pike. Most of the staff on Kamuchawie Lake this summer have been busy with remodeling and construction or mapping, so staff haven’t been able to spend an extraordinary amount of time on the water fishing yet but the short attempts at fishing have been impressive. This summer, there was a lake trout over forty inches caught right off the dock. There have been several lake trout over forty inches caught already with some fish as big as 44 inches. Walleyes up to 28 inches have been caught with pike over 40 inches also showing up. Old timers with knowledge of the history of the lake claim that this lake has produced pike over 48 inches. There are also portage lakes available that produce excellent walleye fishing.

This is just scratching the surface. There are a lot of unknowns about this particular lake. We know this lake is big and has endless amounts of structure, islands and bays. We know this lake is renowned for producing trophy class fish with a lot of deep water and an abundance of pelagic baitfish like cisco. We know that hardly anybody has ever had the chance to fish this lake and that this lake has had virtually no fishing pressure since the last ice age. The opportunities are exciting.
Fly in fishing trips will become available on Kamuchawie Lake beginning in 2025.
This camp is located about forty-five minutes from Bakers Narrows Lodge by air. Guests will either fly out right from Bakers Narrows Lodge or out of a commercial air base just a short 20 minute drive from the lodge (we’ll provide the transport to and from as needed). The fly in ice fishing packages will be the very first ever made available on Kamuchawie Lake. This fly in fishing package for giant lake trout is already creating a lot of buzz in the ice fishing community for adventurous ice anglers. The exploration that comes ahead is going to be exciting and these types of opportunities might only become available once in a lifetime. Bakers Narrows continues to push the industry with extraordinary adventures and bucket list fishing packages.
